Understanding Facebook Cover Size

Importance of the Right Size

First things first, why does the Facebook cover size matter? Well, it's the first thing people see when they visit your profile or page. A poorly sized or pixelated cover can make you look unprofessional at best, and ignored at worst.

Think about it, Facebook's cover photo is like a digital billboard for your personal brand or business. Make it count!

Facebook's Aspect Ratio Preferences

Facebook has an aspect ratio preference of 16:9 for cover photos. That's the same ratio as a widescreen TV or HD video. But don't worry, we'll give you the exact dimensions in a moment.

Optimal Facebook Cover Photo Size

Profile Cover Size

For personal profiles, Facebook recommends a cover photo size of 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall. That's a 16:9 ratio, just like we mentioned earlier.

Here's a quick pro tip: always upload your cover photo with a bit more width and height than the recommended size. This gives you some room to work with if Facebook's automatic cropping goes awry.

Page Cover Size

When it comes to Facebook Pages, the recommended cover photo size is a 820 pixels wide by 462 pixels tall. That's a 19:10 aspect ratio, a bit taller than the personal profile cover.

Again, we recommend uploading a slightly larger image to account for any cropping issues.

Designing Your Facebook Cover

Elements to Include

  • Your brand logo, if applicable. Make sure it's easy to read and not too small.
  • A clear, high-quality image that represents you or your business.
  • optionally, some text or a call-to-action. But be mindful of Facebook's text limit on cover photos (around 20% of the image).

Tools for Creating Your Cover

There are plenty of tools out there to help you create your Facebook cover. From free tools like Canva to paid software like Photoshop, you've got options.

Our personal favorite? Figma. It's free, user-friendly, and perfect for creating on-brand graphics.

Facebook Cover Size Changes Over Time

Historical Sizes

Facebook's cover photo size has changed over the years. Back in 2012, it was a mere 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. By 2017, it had grown to 828 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. And now, we're at 820 pixels wide by 462 pixels tall (for pages).

How to Prepare for Future Changes

Here's what's worked for us: we keep our cover photos slightly oversized and use tools that allow us to easily adjust the size. That way, when Facebook inevitably changes the cover photo size again, we're ready.
